Myrna’s journey

CREATIVE JOURNEY THROUGH ALZHEIMER’S

A creative journey through Alzheimer’s sounds strange.  Alzheimer’s Disease is a journey, but it is definitely not creative.  My husband, Bob, a retired university history professor, was first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011. In the summer of 2019, I wrote a poem about how he had changed due to the disease.  I sent the poem to our daughters, Melanie, and Lara.  It was not long before I received a long email from Lara about her idea for a creative journey through Alzheimer’s Disease.  She is an artist and teaches art in a school in England, where she has been for over thirty years.

One suggestion she made was for me to write a book about our journey.  I suggested that we also include Melanie and the four grandchildren, too, which we have done. Lara had more ideas which I will let her tell you about in her blogs.

I envisioned finishing the project in two years, but it will be four years this fall. I have written and illustrated five children’s books in the past ten years, which were published by Stephen F. Austin State University Press, but this is the first adult book I have written.  I have had valuable help from the Christian Writers’ Fellowship Group, family, and friends during this trip. Our creative journey has helped me deal with the Alzheimer’s disease journey and the loss of my husband of sixty-one years.
